    We especially want to thank Anne Sautman, the Director of Education at Krannart Art Musem, and Shaya Robinson, the
    organizer of S.P.E.A.K. Cafe, for their support during this time. 
    Both Anne and Shaya helped us continue to facilitate
    Art Speak during the school closure.  

    It may not have been the year we expected, but we still grew
    as artists and formed relationships with one another.

    Weekly Art Speak Meetings
    After collecting applications in December, we selected our Art Speak interns and started meeting weekly in January.  Our theme this year was "transformations."  We focused on how we can use art and writing to transform our lives. Our first project involved creating a "happy robot" for the Meemic Foundation's annual art contest.  We brainstormed and wrote about what our robots could transform and make better, and then we spent some time creating a visual to accompany our description.  ​We also worked on transforming "trash" into "treasure" and made old books new again.

  • Kids at Krannert
    We love sharing our love for the arts with children at the Kids at Krannert event.  The star of the show had to be Mrs. Cox's daughter.  We love teaching her!  The Kids at Krannert event is a chance for us to be out in the community and to meet other people who love to express themselves through art!

  • 2020 was a challenging year for Art Speak.

    ​While our time was cut short due to the school closure, we celebrate the time we did have with each other. We are also grateful that we could be a support system for each other during this time. Whether through Zoom meetings, social media, email, or phone, we found a way to stay together and use art to express our emotions.

  • Krannert Orientation
    One of the most anticipated trips of the semester is our visit to the Krannert Art Museum.  Some students had never been to the museum, so it was a memorable experience for us as a group.  The veterans showed off their favorite parts of the museum, and everyone learned something new from Krannert's Director of Education, Anne Sautman.  We especially enjoyed seeing the Hive exhibition, which features two inflatable sculptures with a sound installation.  The sound piqued our curiosity as we heard it from other parts of the museum, and we were amazed at how the scultures looked lit up, especially at night. 

  • S.P.E.A.K. Cafe
    What would Art Speak be without S.P.E.A.K. Cafe?  We look forward to these monthly opportunities to share our work with other people.  It's also a fantastic opportunity for us to learn from other authors, see different styles of writing and expression, and grow as individuals.  

    This year, we were lucky to be invited to the February S.P.E.A.K. Cafe at the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center, which was recently rebuilt.  The new building is welcoming and beautiful.  It was a wonderful night!
